P90X and building more strength.

I have been using P90X with with my own weight lifting for the past month now and I am seeing some nice strength gains. I am doing the things with heavier weight that P90X does not do such as bench pressing with heavier weight and lower reps or squats the same way. I have been mixing in yoga x, core synergistics, legs and back and I also have some one on one with Tony Horton dvd's that I have been mixing in as well. It's fun to mix it up. We have been tossing around the idea of doing Insanity with Shaun T or Rev Abs with Brett Hoebel but were still on the fence with which one to tackle next. The main thing is that P90X put us on a schedule. We probably still work out 5-6 times a week with a rest on Sunday which is pretty much what we did during our initial 90 days with P90X.

Keep pushing play and keep "Bringing It"

P90X Mix and match.

That's Taylor and I in the picture getting ready to head out for her soccer game. She "Brings It" sometimes doing Plyometrics and Yoga. I am sure it will help her to bend it like Beckham. Sometimes we make it a P90X family affair.

So far after my first 90 days of P90X that is what I have been doing. Mixing and matching. I have been working my upper body on Monday-Wednesday-Friday and then on Tuesday-Thursday and sometimes Saturday I will do so leg exercises and usually P90X plyometrics or Core Synergistics. I also have some One on One with Tony Horton workout that I throw into the mix as well. So far this has been working out pretty well. I have been hitting the bench press once again and building my strength back up. I seemed to lose some in my chest during P90X but gained endurance. I have also been going a little heavier on the curls and extensions and such.

I have also been sticking to the nutrition plan. I think it is pretty much embedded in my brain now. Of course I am not perfect and I have to have some brews now and again or maybe some cheese cake but for the most part I am still eating pretty clean at least 90% of the time.

"X" The Insanity diet Part 2

This is part 2 from Steve Edwards on how to "X" the Insanity diet.

Last month, we talked about the INSANITY diet and how anyone who has already completed P90X® should amend it. This time, we'll talk about the exercise component—specifically, how to alter INSANITY if you've just finished a round of P90X. The most common question we get is how INSANITY will affect the muscle mass gained during X. The answer is that if done right, it can improve it. This is based on understanding some basic physiology, primarily the periodization principle. Once you grasp this, you should be able to answer most of your customers' questions about INSANITY.

Let's begin with recovery. The time between actually doing a workout program becomes very important as your fitness improves. We always recommend a break after our workout programs, but P90X, and especially INSANITY, require more calculation. These programs are designed to break you down, let you recover, then increase the breakdown and finish with a bang. The goal is to put your body into a growth (sometimes referred to as mastery) phase over the final few weeks of the program. During this phase, results come rapidly, but stay on it too long and you overtrain—forcing your body into a plateau, or worse, a decline. This is why we recommend that your final P90X fit test be done after a week of recovery.

When transitioning from P90X to INSANITY, it's important to consider that you're moving from a mastery phase of one program into an entry phase of another. Sure, INSANITY's entry phase is very hard, but over the course of P90X, your workload capacity improves. Because INSANITY doesn't have a true resistance component, its first week can function similarly to the transition/recovery weeks of P90X. Post-X, your body's ability to adapt to hard exercise is greatly increased. This means that you can start INSANITY on the heels of P90X, and its first week will function as your recovery week. Even though it will also break you down in some new areas, your fitter body will adapt quickly to the change.

Conversely, post-INSANITY you'll want a longer recovery period. This is because you've essentially extended the adaptive and growth phases of P90X for an extra six-to-eight weeks. No matter how fit you are, your body will always need a break after such a pounding. One-to-three weeks of easy-to-moderate exercise should have you recovered and ready to move into your next round of training.

Speaking of adaptive and growth phases, we should also address how you might want to shorten the first block (or month) of INSANITY. Similar to the diet phases of P90X, you'll only want to continue in the first block of INSANITY as long as your body is adapting to it. Once it feels "easy," it's time to move into the second block. You'll still want to take the designed INSANITY recovery week, because you want to be rested for your next block of training. This will accelerate your time in the adaptive phase of the training block and help you maximize the growth phase.

Finally, we need to discuss how this can improve your muscle mass. The six-to-eight weeks of INSANITY will have improved various energy systems of the body, increasing its potential for hard training. INSANITY will improve your aerobic and anaerobic capacity. Your VO2 max and anaerobic threshold will both improve, as will your body's glycolytic efficiency, which is your ability to recharge your anaerobic system during intense bouts of exercise. The result is that in your next round of P90X (or any muscle-building program) you'll have more energy to burn at the end of each set. This will result in increased reps per set, or more weight per set, both of which lead to increased hypertrophy (muscle growth), if that is your target.

These are the basic principles you should understand about P90X and INSANITY. If you understand the above, you'll be better prepared to coach your customers. There are plenty more variables that can be discussed. Since these are more personal in nature, they should be addressed on the Message Boards, where we can take them on a case-by-case basis.

"X" the Insanity diet.

So you are done with P90X and you want to give Shaun T's Insanity a try. Be sure to read this article by Steve Edwards so you know what to do with your diet.

How to 'X' the INSANITY™ Diet
By Steve Edwards, Director of Results

As a Coach, there's information you should know about our new INSANITY program that you won't find in the guidebook. The guidebook is written as though it's for first-time Beachbody® customers. For someone who has already completed one or more of our programs, especially P90X®, you're going to want to take a different approach, especially where the diet is concerned.

All of our entry-level programs' diets are written assuming weight loss is a primary concern. The P90X diet is not. Instead, its focus is on athletic performance, because the key to getting results with P90X is to improve your physical fitness as much as possible over the course of the program. While INSANITY is definitely a graduate program—meaning you need a fitness base prior to beginning—it is not structured periodizationally the way P90X is. It's shorter and more straightforward. Its results are based more on progressive overload than Muscle Confusion™. Similarly, the diet is based simply on eating clean and then ramping up the calories along with your workouts. Those coming off of the X will want to amend the INSANITY diet guidelines or ignore them totally.

The INSANITY diet is very restrictive calorically. It was designed for weight loss, since that's what most of our customers are primarily interested in. Anyone coming off of P90X or something similar should alter the diet to suit their needs because their body composition will be far more athletic at the beginning. We've left the "additional food" section of the INSANITY diet open-ended for just this reason. However, once someone has gone through rounds of X or an equivalent, they are generally at a point where they should do their own dietary calculations. As a Coach, this is what you should recommend.

When you look at the X diet, you see a plan that's designed to teach you how to eat for athletics. It varies over time, attempting to follow the changes in your body composition. Once you graduate the X, there should not be much need for outside diet plans, except for variety. You could use the INSANITY diet for this, but you'll want to alter your calories towards your own goals and using what you've already learned. It's almost a certainty that a post-X body will have a composition that requires more calories than what the INSANITY diet recommends.

Keep in mind that no matter what diet you choose, at the highest levels of performance you always have to do your own trial and error. There is no one diet right for everyone. Nowhere is this as apparent as during athletic endeavors. By making tweaks to our diet, we will always find individual differences in the ways certain foods affect us. No two athletes eat the same way, exactly. There are some large-scale brush strokes that are nutritionally similar, after which it becomes individual to what works best.

That's Part One of this topic. Next month we'll talk about how to cycle INSANITY into your Beachbody library. It's a two-month program that should not be repeated over and over without substantial breaks in between. So next time we'll talk about how to use INSANITY, along with P90X, so that they build on the fitness gains you make in each one symbiotically.

More Life After P90X

Well after 90 days of P90X I find myself still doing the exercises and popping in the videos. Last week I did upper body weight lifting on Mon, Wed and Fri. On Tues I did P90X Legs and Back minus the pull ups since I did upper body the previous day. Thurs I did P90X Plyometrics and some more leg exercises like squats and leg extensions. I really don't have a routine down yet but I am looking to put together some sort of hybrid work out that incorporates P90X. I lost a few pounds during my 90 days with P90X so I am looking to put in back on but not in my waste. I am pretty much still following phase 3 of the nutrition plan but I do cheat every now and then. If I want something I eat it. I do not feel deprived at all nor do I have any cravings. I have to work the P90X Yoga X in somewhere. I haven't done it since my last week of P90X. I'm thinking I might try and do it on Saturday.

Atlanta Braves' Matt Diaz has done P90X

Read on about Matt Diaz and his offseason weight loss.

Matt Diaz lost 30 pounds this offseason.

Q. How did you lose 30 pounds this offseason?

A. I hate to admit it, but I did an infomercial. … My wife ordered P90X. I saw her doing her leg workout, and it was similar to stuff I did in rehab. I thought that’d be a good way to ease my way back into weightlifting. After a week you realize there’s no easing into that workout.

Q. You watch videos as you work out?

A. They send you 12 videos with 12 different workouts and a diet plan. If you want it, it gives you recipes for every meal, six meals a day …. We moved our kids upstairs out of the nursery and changed the nursery into a P90X room. We got a pull-up bar and dumbbells. … I’d do a P90X workout with my wife in the morning, a baseball workout in the afternoon and go jogging with my wife in the evening while dinner was crock-potting.

I’m sure, as word gets out I will be sharing more stories about celebrities who live the Beachbody lifestyle and are getting incredible results with fitness programs like P90X.

This is part of an article from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution

John "Spider" Salley is doing P90X

4-time NBA champion John "Spider" Salley is joining the ranks of many athletes and celebrities that are doing P90X. It is nice to see one of the pistons' "Bad Boys" bringing it with P90X. Salley said if he had to do it over he would shoot a thousands shots a day like Kobe, work on his cardio and do P90X. Now this man has 4 world championship rings 2 with the Deeeetoit Pistons, 1 with the Lakers and 1 with the Bulls where he played with the greatest ever, Michael Jordan. For Salley to say he would have incorporated P90X into his basketball work outs is a very bold statement.
By the way John got his nick name "Spider" by being afraid of the little buggers. Come on John, your 6 ft 11 in. Funny. Your still the man.

Salley is right about 1 thing though, P90X would have been great for him. If he would have been doing P90X Legs and Back and P90X Plyometrics the results of these 2 dunk attempts against the Bulls would have been much different.

90 Days of P90X are done. Now What do I do?

Well now that my first 90 days of P90X workouts are complete I need to figure out what I want to do now. I have read where one guy did one week of P90X and one week of weight lifting and then alternated like that every week. So far for the past 8 days I have done a lot of weight lifting, chest, shoulders and tri's, core synergistics, back and biceps, plyometrics and the ab ripper. I need to gain back the weight I lost but in a place other than my belly. I thought about getting the P90X Plus work outs or One on One with Tony Horton but I am still not sure yet.

P90X is a great work out program and it is a great head start on fitness for the rest of your life. We will probably always follow the nutrition plan at least 90%. It is a great plan. I was never hungry or felt deprived in any way. Also being part of the Beachbody community is a great thing. It is a place you can go to find work out buddies and lots of fitness-minded individuals just as yourself. You can also get personalized meal plans, trainer tips, chat room, recipes, nutrition tips, slim kitchen videos and so much more.

Body fat% 12.7%

I lost 6.2% body fat while doing P90X, all from my mid section. Everything else stayed the same. I am using these calipers that measure body fat and I am not sure how accurate this measurement is. I might be a little lower but I'm not positive. Lost 4 lbs but hope to gain it back as soon as I start hitting the weights again.(Not in my mid section tough) I drank Shakeology during the full 90 days. What a great drink. Love the greenberry. Also ate a lot of P90X Protein Bars and had a protein shake when I needed it. You can also check out my day 30 P90X results pictures or my day 60 P90X results pictures. I also saved 25% off of all my Beachbody purchases since I became a coach. It really is a lot of fun helping people get started with Team Beachbody. Want to become a Beachbody coach? Day 90: P90X Yoga X

Day 90. P90X yoga X. Ahhhhh. Day 90. Done! We did it. I will be posting my 90 day results pictures within the next day or 2. P90X is a great work out program. P90X changes everything. Changes the way you look at the food you eat. Changes the way you work out. Changes your attitude. Changes your body. Everything. I think everyone should put themselves through 90 days of P90X at least once a year. Stick to your regular work outs and then commit to 90 days of P90X when you have the time.

What are you waiting for? Start you own P90X journey today. Your body will thank you for it.

Day 89: P90X Core Synergistics.

Day 89. P90X Core Synergistics. What can I say that I haven't already said about core synergistics. This work out really makes you sweat. A little bit of everything. Some chest, tri's, abs, shoulders, legs, core work and really gets the heart pumping. Well tomorrow is the last day of this initial 90 days with P90X. We finish up with Yoga X. Stretch X or rest on Sunday but I'm pretty sure we are going to rest. Might go for a run but that's about it. By this time in your work out you should really be feeling pretty good. I know I do.

Thursday, August 6, 2009

Day 88: P90X Stretch X

Day 88. P90X Stretch X. Count down to the beginning of the end. Only 2 days left of P90X. Well, we were supposed to do Stretch X today but we had to modify a bit since we needed a little something extra. Christina did the whole body Hip Hop Abs work out and I did some weight training and then we went a did a couple mile run. What rest? We don't need no stinkin rest. I'm not sure if that is good advice since your body does need to rest and recover but I think everyone is different and your body will let you know. Listen to your body, it will talk to you. The last thing you want is an injury. That would be a real party spoiler. Fitness party that is. I honestly think that anyone who commits to the 90 days of P90X and sticks with the plan for the full 90 days will change their life. You will have created new sleeping, eating and work out habits. All for the best. They say it takes 2 weeks to break a habit so doing P90X for 90 day will definitely create some new habits. You will find yourself not eating fast food as much. You will be reading a lot more food labels. You will be pre-planing your meals when you know you will not be home to eat. You will find yourself packing your supplements along with your clothes when you go on vacation. If we could just teach the rest of this country how to live this lifestyle and curb the obesity trend in the U.S.

Day 87: P90X Kenpo X

Day 87. P90X Kenpo X. Well we were in the mood for something a bit tougher than Kenpo X today so we did P90X plyometrics instead. I know this is the last week and it's supposed to be a recovery week but we just needed something more than Kenpo today. Might ever go for a run later in the day as well. I think this is the first time we did something different from the fitness guide except for when we were in Biloxi. We said we would stick to the fitness plan and we did except for today. We burned more calories with plyometrics than we would have with kenpo anyway.

We even threw the football around today too to get Nik some practice at quarterback and some catching practice.

Nik is really going to have to "Bring It" since he is about the youngest and the smallest on the team. We all know he can do it so no problem. He's been playing baseball for 7 years and he as the arm for quarterback if the coaches decide to put him there.

Nik's weigh in for football.

Your never too old to workout.

Have you ever heard anyone use the excuse "I'm too old to work out"? Well I say hogwash. Haaa. What does that mean anyway? "hogwash" AKA bull S@!t. Beachbody has a program for everyone young or old. Fit or just starting out. Don't let a little thing like a number get in your way to a more healthy lifestyle. Of course check with your doctor before starting any new regimen and then get going. Do what you can. Even if it is only walking it is a start. Great things happen once you set the ball in motion. Want to work out with a buddy? Go to http://www.teambeachbody.com/coach4you and click on the blue "Join Team Beachbody" button. I will be your first buddy and you can add others if you like. Beachbody is a great community of health conscious individuals and a great place to get some tips, log your work outs and maybe make some new friends.

Day 86: P90X Core Synergistics

Day 86. P90X Core Synergistics. This is another one of those work outs that I will have to work in to my routine. You really sweat while doing Core Synergistics. You use a little bit of everything during this work out. Can you say prison push ups. Those really get you going. I found the sweat dripping down my face after those. What about plank to chaturanga run? Now those are tough. Reach high and under push ups are fun too. Keep "Bringing It".

Monday, August 3, 2009

Day 85. P90X Yoga X.

Day 85. P90X Yoga X. Well we are down to the home stretch. 5 more work outs left. When I look back now to hard Yoga X was the first time I did it and now how manageable it is I will definitely have to add this to my routine. It works and stretches so many muscles. I really don't like it, but it works. What ever you do don't skip the yoga during your 90 days with P90X. You need it. You might not like it either but you have to do it.I know it's long but stick to the plan.

Sunday, August 2, 2009

Day 84. P90X Stretch X or Rest.

Day 84. P90X Stretch X or Rest. We definitely rested today and we need it. We burned a ton of calories tearing up the dance floor last night at a wedding. Another late night. I could have been doing P90X plyometrics when "Jump Around" came on. Funny. Should've taken some video so we can laugh now. All well. Next time.

Couple of pics from the wedding.

Saturday, August 1, 2009

Day 83: P90X Kenpo X

Day 83. P90X Kenpo X. Well I finally figured out how to make Kenpo X more difficult. Stay out til 6am drinking beer and then wake up and do Kenpo X. I was dragging today but it is my own fault. Man! If we could find a way to get beer on the nutrition plan it would really be perfect.(kidding) You really have to choose. A 6 pack you can see or a 6 pack you can taste. That's a toughy. Well hopefully I sweat enough today to get it all out of my system only to go to a wedding tonight. Hmmmm. Wonder what I'll be drinking there. Like I said in earlier posts. I follow the nutrition plan about 90% of the time and when I don't it's usually beer so I don't feel guilty. Keep "Bringing It"

Friday, July 31, 2009

Day 82: P90X Legs and Back/Ab Ripper

Day 82. P90X Legs and Back/Ab Ripper. Today was tough. I don't think I got enough carbs yesterday. I did not want to do the Ab Ripper today. I was really feeling tired. I made it through though. You have to Bring it. Just goes to show you that nutrition is very important. You need to fuel your body in order to bring the intensity. Today was the last tough work out of this initial 90 days. Kenpo tomorrow and recovery week next week. Yoga, core, kenpo and then were done. My hands are also killing me today. I bought some gloves but they were ripped when I brought them home so I need to return them. Back and bicep day really gets your hands if you are using dumbells and then more pull ups today don't help at all either. All well. I think I bought the gloves too late since there is only 8 days left and I won't be using the dumbells during these last 8 days. That's ok. I'll use them when I start back up on the weights.

Using P90X to help train for a marathon.

Athletes use the P90X workouts to keep a competitive edge during a marathon. P90X keeps your whole body in shape. With a wide range of exercises you will find that P90X will give you the edge in any competition.

Day 81: P90X Yoga X

Day 81. P90X Yoga X. 9 more days and counting. I can't believe how much easier yoga is now then it was the first time I did it. First couple times I did it I hated it. Now I like it. It really gest your muscles loose after working them hard with the weights, push ups and pull ups. We are going to have to start thinking about what we are going to do when this 90 days of P90X is up. I think I might want to do a second round starting in September but I'm not sure yet. I know I want to get back on my weights and bench. I think I will always mix in P90X work outs with what ever I do in the future. Love these P90X work outs.

Day 80: P90X Back and Biceps/Ab Ripper

Day 80. P90X Back and Biceps/Ab Ripper. Only 10 days left. I can't believe it. Today's pull ups were tougher than usual. Not sure why, they were just hard. What a great work out. This one makes your biceps feel rock hard. I was pretty tired after this one and then I remembered we have to do the Ab Ripper also. Made it through ok. Always feels good when you are done. Still trying to get back on the right eating schedule since when we were in Biloxi I found myself skipping meals and eating later. I think after today everything should be back to normal.

Day 79: P90X Plyometrics

Day 79. P90X Plyometrics. Not too much to say here today about plyometrics except it is as not as difficult as it used to be. You have to constantly remind yourself to get low and jump high to see the best results. Don't just run through these work outs. You have to up your intensity level from the previous work out if you want to see great results.

Day 78: P90X Chest, Shoulders and Triceps/Ab Ripper

Day 78. P90X Chest, Shoulders and Triceps/Ab Ripper. It's been awhile since I did my P90X work out after 5pm. We just got back from Biloxi and I wasn't sure I was going to have the energy to get through these work outs today. Well, I surprised myself. I got through them just fine. I know my calories have been a little off for the past 3 days but I will get back on track tomorrow. My arms feel tight. My chest feels tight. We even ran while in Biloxi. Things are going good. We probably did cheat a little with some beers, pizza, Arby's, lobster tail with melted butter etc but I'm ok with that. 90% of the time we eat clean. A lot of people ask "Is there a cheat day during P90X?" I want to say no. The only person you are cheating is yourself. P90X is not just a 90 day work out but hopefully the start of a life long wellness change for yourself. P90X is just the tool to get you started. Do we cheat? Well, I guess you could say YES but it's more like we know we eat good most of the time so if we want a little something not on the nutrition plan then we go for it. For the most part though we follow it and do not feel deprived at all. You want 6 pack abs? Up your intensity and follow the nutrition plan exactly. If you cheat a little bit your results will suffer but if you are ok with it then splurge a little. Now I'm not saying go out and eat a dozen donuts but if you are craving a blizzard from DQ then go ahead and get yourself a small. It's not going to kill you but don't make a habit of it. Actually when I have a sweet tooth I have a protein shake with organic peanut butter and rice milk. Tastes like dessert.
